Where To Visit

Chanonry Point

Chanonry Point is a popular place for both locals and visitors to the area, who come to enjoy the stunning coastal scenery and fantastic views across the Moray Firth towards Castle Stuart Golf Course, Dalcross (Inverness) airport, Fort George and Inverness. Chanonry Point is particularly popular (with parking at a premium)for viewing dolphins, of which there are around 130. The dolphins when they are playing and fishing, can be seen from only a few metres away just off the point area. A stone memorial can also be found at Chanonry point marking the last known place where the Brahan Seer was burnt to death (see the section on ‘Club History’ for more information).

Urquhart Castle & Fort George

Urquhart Castle sits beside Loch Ness near the village of Drumnadrochit. Though extensively ruined, it was in its day one of the largest strongholds of medieval Scotland, and remains an impressive structure, splendidly situated on a headland overlooking Loch Ness. It is also near this castle that the majority of Nessie sightings occur. Fort George was built to pacify the Scottish Highlands in the aftermath of the Jacobite rising of 1745, replacing an earlier Fort George built with the same aim after the 1715 Jacobite rising. The fortress has never been attacked and has remained in continuous use as a garrison. The fortification is based on a Star design, it remains virtually unaltered and nowadays is open to visitors with exhibits and recreations showing use at different periods, while still serving as an army barracks.

You will also enjoy some whiskies and learn all about the different varieties. There are many tours which can be booked in advance.

An exciting interpretive exhibition opened as part of the new visitor centre in December 2007. Using interactive characters that witnessed or were involved in the battle and incorporating the latest historical and archaeological evidence it tells the course of events through fresh eyes. Included within the exhibition's Battle zone is the immersion theatre where you can experience first-hand what it was like to be in the middle of the action at Culloden and displays of authentic weapons and artefacts found on the battlefield. A hand held audio device with multi-language dialogue is available to take onto the battlefield to help you further understand the armies' manoeuvres and tactics.
